DroneSpotterAR Privacy Policy

Summary

DroneSpotterAR ("the App") is published by CAVU Consulting LLC. The App is a fully on-device application. It does not require an account, does not collect personal information, does not contain advertising, does not contain third-party analytics or tracking SDKs, and does not transmit user data to us or any other party.

The only network request the App makes is an anonymous fetch of a short-lived Apple MapKit JS authorization token from a server we operate. That request carries no information about you.

What the App accesses on your device

DroneSpotterAR requests permission to use the following device capabilities. Each is used only on your device to power the corresponding feature. None of the data accessed via these permissions leaves your device.

  • Location (When in Use) — centers the map on you, draws range rings around your position, and computes distances between you and detected drones. Provides altitude for the AR overlay.
  • Bluetooth (foreground & background) — scans for ASTM F3411-22a / FAA Part 89 Remote ID broadcasts from nearby drones. The App reads only the broadcast service UUID 0xFFFA (Open Drone ID).
  • Camera — provides the live camera feed for the AR view. The feed is rendered locally and is not transmitted, captured, or stored unless you tap the screenshot or record button.
  • Motion & Orientation — reads device compass, pitch, and roll so that drone tags align with the live camera image in AR.
  • Photo Library (Add-Only) — required only when you tap the screenshot or record button in the AR view to save a capture to your photo library. The App cannot read your existing photos.
  • Notifications — if you enable Background Notifications on the Alerts tab, the App posts a local iOS notification when a new drone is detected nearby while DroneSpotterAR is in the background. The notification is generated entirely on your device.

Data we collect

None. The App stores its preferences (alert sound on/off, alert haptic on/off, background notification on/off) locally on your device using iOS preferences. We do not have a server-side record of your installation, your usage, or your preferences.

Network communication

The App's WebView sandbox loads Apple's MapKit JS library directly from Apple's CDN. To authenticate this request, the App fetches a short-lived, anonymous JSON Web Token (JWT) from a server we operate. The request carries no information about you or your device beyond standard HTTPS request headers (IP address, User-Agent). Connection logs are retained by our hosting provider at the network level for fraud and abuse prevention only, under their standard retention. The token itself contains no information about you.

What about the drone data the App displays?

The drone information shown in the App (serial number, operator location, takeoff location, position, altitude, speed) comes from Remote ID broadcasts that drones in the United States and the European Union are legally required to transmit publicly over Bluetooth 5. This is comparable to ADS-B transmissions from manned aircraft. DroneSpotterAR receives these public broadcasts on your device, parses them, and displays them to you. Nothing about these broadcasts is uploaded to us.

Children

DroneSpotterAR is rated 4+ and contains no objectionable content, no advertising, no in-app purchases, no third-party content, and no communication features. We do not knowingly collect any data from children. If you are a parent or guardian and have questions about the App, please contact us.

Your rights

Because we collect no personal data, there is nothing for us to retrieve, export, or delete on your behalf. If you uninstall the App, all on-device preferences are removed by iOS.

For users in jurisdictions covered by the GDPR (EU/EEA/UK), CCPA (California), or comparable laws: we do not "sell" or "share" personal information as those terms are defined under those statutes, because we do not collect personal information.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will publish the revised version at this URL and update the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be announced in the App's release notes.
